Valentine Family Quilts

Held in conjunction with the recent dedication of the

"Mary E. Valentine Collections Wing" at the Bethel Historical

Society’s Robinson House, this colorful display features a

variety of quilts once owned or made by members of the

Valentine family of Bethel and now in the Society’s collection.
During the exhibit run, selected portions of the documentary film

"Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics" will be shown

Civil War Soldier's Quilts Lecture

 Quilts

Pam Weeks, a quilt historian, appraiser and teacher, as well as Curator of the New England Quilt Museum, will present an illustrated program about Civil War soldiers' quilts.  Only sixteen such quilts are known to exist, and Pam Weeks has studied most of them in person.  During her talk, she will outline the origins of the U.S. Sanitary Commission at the beginning of the War; the roles women played on the home front and the battlefield; and feature the stories of fourteen authentic Civil War soldiers’ quilts.  She will also reference the record book of the Ladies’ Union Aid Society of Bethel (1861-1863) in the collection of the Maine Historical Society.

Following her presentation, she will sign copies of her book, Civil War Quilts, a 192-page hardcover volume containing over 170 photos.

Lime Sorbet Margaritas

Need to cool down? Try this tempting treat...

LIME SORBET MARGARITAS

1 lime, cut into 8 wedges
1/4 cup sugar
2 pints lime sorbet
1/2 cup tequila

Rub the lime wedges around the rims of 8 stemmed glasses. Place the sugar on a small plate. Turn each glass upside down and dip the rims in the sugar to coat.

Place 2 scoops of sorbet in each glass and pour 1 tablespoon of tequila over each. Serve with a spoon.

For a non-alcoholic, kid-friendly version of the Lime Sorbet Margaritas, replace the tequila for each glass with 2 tablespoons lemon-lime soda.

Quilting Tip of the Week 6.12.14

I don't know about you, but I scratch myself every time I use straight pins to hold down my bindings while sewing. While the regular quilting binding clips are so expensive, it's time to think outside of the box.

Check out these two options from the local dollar store--simple bobby pins and hair clips. Both work equally as well as the other options and save you money. You can use the small bobby pins on smaller projects while saving those larger pins for your quilts. Look Mom, no more scratches! :)
