At our Area 3 meeting in September, Georgette Beauchesne shared with us her fleece dialysis mitten she made originally for her niece's husband. One mitten turned into 24 (enough for all the patients in his dialysis center) and has exploded to over 1250 mittens made and distributed across our state.
The centers that will currently accept mittens (one per patient) is Wilton, Togus, Auburn, Lewiston, Augusta, Presque Isle, Bangor, Brewer, Fairfield, Belfast, Biddeford, Portland, Ellsworth and Westbrook. She mentioned that a delivery will be made to Damariscotta, Gardiner and Bath. If your local dialysis center is not listed here, you might want to make a mitten and approach them before making a large amount of mittens.
So, to make the mittens is much easier that you think and you really don't need a paper pattern. Georgette was a doll to give me a sample to photograph for you.
The purchased oven mitt on the right is 11" long from top to bottom. Just take your purchased oven mitt and place on your fleece and add 1/4" seam allowance. Add an additional 8 1/2" to the length. Sew mitt using 1/4" seam allowance and fold over for 1 1/2" hem as shown in photo below. The completed mitten should measure 18" from tip to hem.
If you have any questions on this pattern, you can reach Georgette at 207-364-2835 or email her at gab@gwi.net
