Updates for Area 3

Welcome to a winter wonderland....the snow is falling and Christmas music is playing in the background. I'm sure you are busy completing your holiday projects and baking. Losing six days between Thanksgiving and Christmas puts extra pressure on us, so be sure to take a few moments to sip on a cup of tea and enjoy the wonder of the season.

Unfortunately, 2014 will bring us change in Area 3. Our newsletter editor has not responded to my many requests for a date for our next newsletter. Four months is sufficient to realize that she is no longer interested in continuing this venture. So, if even temporarily, we will post your chapter reports and news on this blog.

While I welcome any news any time, if might be helpful to have some guidelines for you to strive for. Let's put the first deadline for January 10th. Not to worry--like I said, we can be free and loose on this.

Have pictures of your event or charity projects to share? Please be sure to also include the names of the people in the photos. Have a recipe to share? Send it along. Try a new quilting gadget or read a new quilting book and would like to tell us about it? Let me know.

Like the newsletter, this blog is YOURS--let's hear from you and your chapter!

Wishing you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a quilty New Year!

Thank You

Thank you to the quilt community for your donations. We received quilts from as far away as Australia and supplies to replace the quilt fabric and notions lost in the fire. The fire that destroyed our home was devastating, but we quickly learned that we had a loving and caring community of people surrounding us.

Also, thank you to the quilt shops who collected quilts and blankets for the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. We sent 477 items all together which included baby clothes, sheets, mittens and hats as well as the quilts, blankets and afghans. We far exceed the items we lost in the house fire.

My husband, Wolf, maintains the “Gathering of Eagles” ministry which has been a supporter of Pine Ridge for many years. Wolf and I will continue to collect quilts and other items throughout the year for a shipment planned for September 2014. We no longer accept used items. Pine Ridge has indicated that they desperately need baby clothes. We ship directly to the local church on the reservation which has a distribution center where items can be stored and kept clean and dry, then freely given to those in need.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for everything.

BIG Thank You From Laura and Wolf

It is will great delight that I can report that the request for quilts and blankets to replace the 150 lost in the house fire of fellow quilter, Laura Freeman, destined to go to the children of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota in October, and has exceeded our wildest expectations.
Along with PTQG members, my own HGTV Quilting board friends and local church members a total of 160 quilts, 200 blankets and 54 afghans were collected for a grand total of 414 wraps of love!
Laura and her husband, Wolf, want to extend their deepest gratitude for all the love and support not only for the children, but also for the gifts of money, gift cards and items to replace Laura’s sewing room.  They feel truly blessed to know how we can all come together to help those in need.

More Information On Upcoming Area 3 Meeting April, 2014

We have more information on the upcoming Area 3 meeting hosted by the Village Scrappers of Livermore on Tuesday, April 22nd.

The speaker will be Bonnie Dwyer on "100 Years of American Quilts." This talk and trunk show includes about 25 examples of quilts throughout time.

The block chosen for the drawing will be a 12 1/2" unfinished house block. You can piece, paper piece, applique--it's your choice. The only requirements (besides the size) is that the block contains a house AND a daylight blue sky. Clouds are optional!

More information on location and refreshments will be posted as I get them.

American Legion Auxiliary Needs Lap Robes

I was asked to post this to see if anyone can help:

"The American Legion Auxiliary’s current project is lap robes for the Scarborough Veterans home. We need 125 lap robes by December 15th.

This is our Christmas project and if you could make a few for us it would be wonderful. It is a great tribute to your family members who served to help those in need.

The quilts can be dropped off at the Westbrook American Legion, 300 Conant Street, Westbrook, ME or call  Beverly Preston at 207-854-5788 for a pick up."

Area 3 Meeting and Updates

Many thanks to the members of Classic Quilters of Lewiston/Auburn and Scraps and Patches of Poland for one fantastic Area 3 meeting!

Today we shared lots of yummy desserts, beautiful show and tell items, a very interesting speaker on the Underground Railroad and the generosity of those who brought quilts, blankets and sewing notions for Laura. It's so heartwarming to see everyone pull together to replace those blankets and quilts lost in the tragic house fire. Thank you to all of you who stepped forward to help.

Winner of the 16 Civil War blocks was Beth Maitland and the winner of the mug rug set was Fran Martin.

While I delivered 112 quilts and blankets to Laura and Wolf's church, many more have been collected by her church members and other quilters. As of last Sunday, the count was 127 quilts and 168 blankets for a total of 295! In addition, many contributed baby clothing, hats and other winter items.

Today's collection brought in more quilts and sewing notions and we still have more quilts/blankets to be picked up at the quilt drop-off points this week. I would venture a rough guesstimate will be around 330-350 quilts and blankets total! Can you picture those lucky children all wrapped up in the love of strangers? Makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Here are photos from the Area 3 meeting to enjoy. Unfortunately, I was in the back of the room and the lighting wasn't the best for my type of camera. Hopefully you can get the jest.

Just some of the many trunkfuls of items for Laura

We had 57 in attendance!

Lucky we keep the calories at the door...

Our speaker was Connie
