Quilting Tip of the Week 6.25.15

One of the biggest errors in quilting is how you press your seams. Like me, I thought ironing with force would give me the best results. Not so. It's important to carefully "set" the seam by pressing down on the seam without moving the iron, lifting and moving to the next section. This will bury the threads in the fabric.

It's your choice to either press to the dark or press open your seams. By pressing and not ironing, it will ensure you minimal stretching of fabric, especially if you are working on the bias.

Sweet Tea Recipe by No. 2 Pencil

Perfect Sweet Tea Recipe
 

The baking soda is the secret for ultra smooth sweet tea!
 
Ingredients
  • 10 regular sized Lipton tea bags
  • Fresh, filtered water
  • 1½ cups of sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon of baking soda
Instructions
  1. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil, remove from heat and add tea bags.
  2. Let tea steep for about 10 minutes.
  3. Remove tea bags and add sugar to hot water.
  4. Stir until sugar is completely dissolved.
  5. Add baking soda and stir again.
  6. Pour tea and sugar mixture into large pitcher.
  7. Add 12 cups of ice water and stir until cooled.
  8. Serve over ice.
  9. Makes one gallon of sweet tea.

Need a quick way to mark your rulers for marking or your quilt for machine quilting? Try using blue painter's tape. It comes in various sizes and will not damage your quilt. You can even reuse each strip of tape several times.

Low-Calorie Key Lime Pie Shake Recipe

Cool off those hazy days of summer with a cool drink with only 124 calories per serving!

This recipe uses soy milk, but you can substitute low-fat or fat-free milk if you wish. Add a drop of vanilla flavoring to the mix if you do.

1/2 cup cold light vanilla soy milk
1/4 cup fat-free vanilla ice cream
2 tbsp. canned crushed pineapple in juice
2 tbsp. sugar-free calorie-free vanilla syrup
1 tbsp. lime juice
1 packet no-calorie sweetener
3/4 cup crushed ice or 4-6 ice cubes
2 tbsp. fat-free whipped topping
1/4 sheet low-fat honey graham crackers, crushed
Optional lime slice

Note: If desired, you can add a touch of rum or lime-flavored vodka.

Combine soy milk, ice cream, pineapple, vanilla syrup, lime juice, sweetener and ice in blender. Blend on high speed for 30-45 seconds. Pour shake into glass and top with whipped topping and crushed graham crackers. Garnish with lime slice, if desired.
